I didn’t stop for any of them. I didn’t need their approval then, and I certainly don’t need it now.
Chapter 6: The End of Troubles
The private apartment was silent, a stark contrast to the chaos downstairs. Leo lay sprawled, propped up on several pillows, his face pressed against an ice pack. When the door opened and I entered, his face lit up.
“Mom!”
I ran to the bed, hugged him, and gently stroked his bruised cheek. “I’m here, Leo. I’m here.”
“Aunt Vanny was really angry,” he whispered into my shoulder.
“Aunt Vanny’s gone, honey,” I said, stroking his hair. “She’ll never be mad at you again. I promise.”
“Did I ruin the party?”
“No, Leo,” I said, stepping back to look him in the eye. “You threw a proper party. You were the bravest boy in the whole room.”
I stayed with him until he fell asleep, breathing deeply and evenly. Elias stood by the window, watching the city lights.
“The Rossi family is at the police station, ma’am,” Elias reported quietly. “The president of Northern Bank has filed a formal fraud complaint against Vanessa. It seems the investigation is already revealing more than we expected.”
“Okay,” I said.
„A co z Titan Corp?”
I looked out the window at the glowing Rossi empire logo on a nearby skyscraper. “Sell the assets. Keep the factories—the workers can’t suffer for the sins of the family. But the Rossi name? Cross that out. We’ll rename everything Aurora.”
“And your parents?”
I thought of my mother’s forced smile and my father’s firm hand. I thought of the “unemployed single mother” they tried to hide.
“They have their penthouse,” I said. “For now. But send them the bill for Leo’s medical treatment. And tell the lawyers to file for a permanent restraining order. I want them to have enough money to live on, but never enough to buy electricity.”
I grabbed Leo’s toy car from the nightstand. It was simple, plastic, but it had withstood a fall better than Rossi’s fortune.
I left the hotel through the front door. The press awaited me like a wall of flashing lights and screaming questions.
“Mrs. Rossi! How long have you been president?”
“Isabella! What is the future of Titan Corp?”
“Do you have any comment on your sister’s arrest?”
I didn’t answer. I held my head high and walked at a steady pace. I got into the backseat of the car.
For years, I lived in my own shadow. I accepted their insults, rejections, and so-called “charity.” I allowed them to call me a burden because I thought that was the price one paid for family.
But as the car pulled away from the Grand Astoria, I looked at Leo sleeping next to me and realized that the only burden I had ever carried was the weight of their expectations.
The “unemployed single mother” disappeared. The “chairwoman” did her job.
I was Isabella. And for the first time in my life, I was free.
The phone in my bag vibrated. It was a private number. My father.
I stared at the screen for a long time. I saw a missed call notification and pressed the “Block” button.
The Rossi empire collapsed. And from the ashes rose the ice cream cone I went to get with my son.
End.
